Both treatments do fundamentally the same thing — remove damaged skin so healthier skin replaces it. The differences lie in how deep they go, what they cost, how much downtime they need, and, importantly for Pakistani skin, how much pigmentation risk they carry.

A chemical peel dissolves damaged skin with acid. A laser removes it with focused light energy — more precisely, and usually more deeply.
How Chemical Peels Work
A chemical peel applies an acid solution — commonly glycolic, salicylic, TCA or a Jessner blend — that loosens the bonds holding dead skin cells together, so the surface sheds and fresher skin comes through. Peels are graded by depth: superficial peels affect only the outer layer with minimal downtime, medium peels reach further with visible peeling for around a week, and deep peels are rarely used on darker skin.
The strength is control through chemistry and cost: peels are affordable, adjustable, and predictable when the right acid is matched to the right concern.
How Laser Resurfacing Works
Laser resurfacing converts focused light into heat within the skin. Fractional CO2 laser treats microscopic columns of tissue while leaving surrounding skin intact, which speeds healing while triggering significant collagen production in the deeper layers.
That deeper collagen response is why laser outperforms peels for textural problems — indented acne scarring, deeper wrinkles, genuinely rough texture. It reaches where a surface treatment simply cannot.

The Pakistani Skin Consideration
This is the part that should shape your decision more than any other. Medium-to-deep skin tones carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — dark patches appearing after any inflammation or aggressive treatment. That risk applies to both peels and lasers, but it rises sharply with depth and with incorrect settings.
In practice this means most sensible plans on brown skin start conservatively — superficial to medium peels, correct topical preparation, strict sun protection — and escalate to laser only when the concern genuinely requires it. Going straight to aggressive resurfacing because it sounds more advanced is how people end up with pigmentation that is harder to treat than what they started with.
This is especially true for melasma, which can rebound and worsen after aggressive laser treatment and should never be treated with laser as a first step.
Which Should You Choose?
Start with peels if: your concerns are pigmentation, uneven tone, dullness, mild texture or active acne; you want lower cost and minimal downtime; or you would rather see how your skin responds before committing to something stronger.
